Pilih rumus FV, terlihat berlatar biru, lalu tekan tombol OK.

SUM and SUMIF Formulas in Excel

Many readers of this blog have asked for an explanation of the formulas of articles in this blog that use Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet. This way it will be free for them to modify that Excel sheet and make it better suit their needs.

To respond to those requests, now I will explain some formulas that I use in Excel Spreadsheet. SUM and SUMIF are the most often formulas I use.

SUM
SUM formula will add up numbers of all cells that contain number, see examples below.
The formula will add up all the numbers in the table on the left. If viewed in more detail will appear as shown below.

Look at the cell C3, a written formula =SUM(G2:G6), where the formula adds up all numbers in column G from row 2 to row 6. SUM function can be placed anywhere, not necessarily just below numbers that will add up, as if calculating manually. The important thing is to determine which numbers or cells or range that will be added up. Determination of cell can be by column, row, or even random.

Formulas in Excel can be manually typed in the cell. But for a clearer and more detail explanation, it is better to use the Insert Function in the Formula Bar as shown below.

The red arrow is mouse pointer and pressing the fx (Insert Function) on the Formula Bar, to fill the formula in cell C3. After the fx button is presse, then below window will appear.

Select the SUM formula in formula list, shown in blue color and press the OK button. Then it will appear a window like below picture. If the SUM formula is not visible, it can be searched by typing in ‘Search for a function’ window, it appears with black background, then type the Go button. Then the formula will appear in ‘Select a function’ window like above picture.

Select cells or range that will be added up, on the above picutre the range is G2 to G6 (G2:G6), then press Ok, then the formula will be written directly and function in cell C3. If the data are in separated cells or ranges, it can be added into the Number 2, Number 3, etc. up to 255 data. Figure below shows example of separated data. Those data are the same as above but broken down into 3 different tables.

SUMIF
SUMIF formula is used to add up data from multiple cells with specific criteria, not all data will be added up. See the picture below, SUMIF will add up only if data fit a certain criteria. It can be seen that SUMIF adds up ‘apple’ numbers and equal to 4.

If we look in the right table, there is number 1 and number 3 in cell adjacent to apple cells, so the SUMIF of apple will be = 1+3 = 4.

For mango, with a total of 8. If viewed in the right table, at every cell containing mango, adjacent to cell with number 2, 1, and 5. Then the SUMIF of mango will be = 2+1+5 = 8.

Similarly to orange, with a total of 7. If viewed in the right table, the cell containing orange, adjacent to the cell with number 7. Then the SUMIF of orange will also be a 7, because there is only one cell that contain orange.

Figure below shows the detail of the SUMIF formula.

The range in the formula above is column F from row 3 to row 8 where name of fruit are written, in the formula it is written as F3:F8. The criteria used is cell B6, which is apple. Whereas the cells that will be added up are in the column G with row 3 to row 8 or G3:G8. So the formula will read the criteria in cell B6 as apple, then look for cells that contain apple in column F of row 3 to 8, and then summing cells in column G which adjacent to cells which are containing apple.

SUMIF formula can be applied to data that is written horizontally, see picture below. It can be seen fruit names arranged horizontally, with numbers below fruit. On smaller table under the large table, it appears the sum in accordance with the formula SUMIF criteria. Because this horizontal arranged data is exactly the same as above data, which is arranged vertically, then the sum of SUMIF for each criterion is the same, ie 4 for apple, mango 8, and 7 to orange. But horizontal arranged data is rather confusing and not commonly used.

Details of steps to implement the SUMIF formula is as follows. Select the cell that will contain the formula, shown in the figure below is C6. Press the fx (Insert Function) in the formula bar as shown by the red arrow.

Then it will appear a window as below. Select with mouse SUMIF formula, as in picture it has blue background, then press OK. If the formula does not appear on the list then can search by writing on the window ‘Search for a function’ and press Go.

The next display will appear as shown below. With the Range column F from row 3 to row 8 (F3: F8) contain names of fruit. Criteria is the cell B6, the apple, so the formula will calculate apple data only. Sum_range is an area where data is retrieved, it is column G rows 3 to row 8 (G3:G8), and formula will only add up apple data. It can be seen the figure 4 below Sum_range line, this figure to check whether the formula is correct. And apple indeed has data with number 1 and 3, so 1+3 = 4, therefore the formula is correct. So then the OK button can be pressed.

Do the same for the mango and orange. Formula can be copied and paste and then change their parameters.

In the Inventory Control Program, SUMIF formula is used to calculate data in different sheet, as shown below. Can be seen in Formula Bar,  the criteria in SUMIF formula is in ‘register’ sheet, while calculated data in ‘transaction’ sheet. SUMIF is used to calculate the transaction with criteria is a specific part number (P/N).

Making Cheap Electromagnet With Fluorescent Lamp Ballast

Electromagnet is a magnet made by running a flow of electric current through coil of wire on a core made of ferromagnetic material, usually iron.

To create a strong electromagnet, it is required very long of enamelled wire to make many windings, the more wire turns the stronger magnetic field. But enamelled wire price is quite expensive, for 0.3 mm diameter can reach US$ 0.1 per meter. The price may be cheaper if purchased in large quantities, and in units of kilograms with price about US$ 11/kg at retailers in Jakarta. Even if the enamelled wire has already available, there will be problem to make winding. It needs to have a special tool to make a good winding. Alternator and electric motor repair shop can help to make a good winding, but must spend some money for that service.

There is an easy yet inexpensive way to make an electromagnet, by using coil of ballast fluorescent lamp. Find an used ballast as the photo below, this ballast works with voltage 220 volts and power 20 watts. Check with ohmmeter whether both connectors are connected, if not connected means the inside coil was broken. That broken coil can still be used if the disconnected wire is in the top layer of winding, so that broken wire can be reconnected or just remove the remaining length of wire. If buy a new ballast, the price is about US$ 1.60 each.

Electromagnet can also be made from a transformer, it has great strength with 'E' shaped iron core, please read here.

Remove ballast cover plate, remove also magnet core plates that are mounted on the coil. Coil will be obtained as the photo below.

Connect both ends of the coil enamelled wire with a longer cable. Then wrap the coil with insulation to avoid damage and loose. Too much insulation will weaken magnetic field.

Cut two pieces of ballast housing plates as the photo below. Drill two holes of 3 mm diameter for bolts, make sure those two holes at the same position on each plate. Those holes will be used by bolts and pass through the empty space in the center of coil. Both plates will be fitted to clamp coil and hold by two bolts.

Prepare some pieces of small nails. Nails will be filled into the inside of the coil and serves as coil corel. Nails that I use are one-inch sized, the smaller the better because it makes a solid coil core thus strengthening the magnetic field generated. Please note that magnetic field of the iron core is stronger than steel core. Because iron is easily rusted, so I am looking for nails with a bit rusty, to make sure the nails are made of iron, not steel. The nail head should be cut off to reduce empty spaces inside the core and make it more solid. But since I will use those nails for other purposes, so I leave those nails in their original shape.

Plates of original ballast core can also be used for electromagnet core, but should be cut in order to be filled into the center of the coil.

Prepare two M3 sized screws with a length of about 20mm, complete with two washers and nuts on each bolt, as shown in the photo below.

Fit those two screws on one plate, with one washer on each bolt. Washer serves to widen the surface of bolt pressure to plate. Place the coil on the side of the plate where there are threads of bolts. Then fill some nails into the inside of coil.

Shown in the picture above the plate that has two bolts, coil is placed over the plate, and loaded nails inside the coil. Also can be seen plates with insulation layer, which aims to provide better protection to the coil. But that plate insulation is not very important and can be eliminated if we require a stronger magnetic field.

After fill in enough nails into the coil, fit the other plate to cover the coil. Tie the two plates to make them clamp the coil tightly by placing and tightening nuts on both bolts. Do not forget to install rings between plate and nut to distribute pressure of bolts and nuts on plates. Be sure not to have any nail stuck between coil and plates, pinched nail could damage enamelled wire.

Finished electromagnet will be look like below photo. Shown the coil is clamped by plates with nuts and bolts. Also shown two cables are connected to the coil.

If powered by 30 volts, this electromagnet can lift loads weighing 340 grams, and requires current of 0.57 amperes, with a power of about 16.9 watts. Video below shows the coil lifts 1 piece of big gear plus 2 small pieces of small gears.

I made this electromagnet at no cost at all. Ballast was hiding for about 20 years in the garage, because the fluorescent light was replaced with compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) which is cheaper and more practical and using electronic ballast.

Magnetic force will be stronger with bigger current and more winding. I haven't tried to unravel glued ballast coil yet. If ballast coil enameled wire is rewinded with smaller diameter coil to get more winding, then we can get a much more powerful electromagnet.

This electromagnet can be used as component for: actuator, inductor, door bell, toy, experiment, relay, door lock / slot electromagnet, etc..

Membuat Elektromagnet Murah Dari Neon Ballast Koil

Siapkan beberapa buah paku kecil.

Why Does Battery Explode?

During recharging, battery releases hydrogen and oxygen gases. It is known that hydrogen is a flammable gas, while oxygen is a substance that helps the combustion process. So the combination of those gasses could be flammable. Mixture of hydrogen and oxygen in a certain concentration when contact with fire or high temperature though only in one small spot, it could be exploded. More details about recharging battery can be read on: Charging Your Vehicle Battery.

In the dry cell battery, hydrogen and oxygen gases do not easily go out, and accumulated inside battery housing. If the battery is recharged too high and exceed the normal limits (overcharge), then production of hydrogen and oxygen are also much higher. So at some point will exceed the ability of the battery container and ultimately rupture the container aka battery to explode. Sealed battery such as dry battery (gel cell, Adsorbed Glass Mat, etc.) have higher risk of explosion then wet lead-acid battery.

Likewise, if too much battery load. When the current is going out of the battery, the battery also produces heat. If the heat is too high, then the amount of steam formed by heat is too much and the pressure will be too high and breaks battery container.

So, since the battery produces gases when recharge and discharge, then do not place it in a closed container.

Today dry cell batteries are popularly used. This type of battery has a maximum recharging voltage slightly lower than wet battery.

For example, for MK brand dry cell battery, the specification states that the charger voltage should be between 13.8-14.1 volts at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius or 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Charger voltage must be reduced if temperature gets higher, in order to reduce gas formation. While some vehicles have a charging system with a voltage of 14.3-14.4 volts, so it can cause overcharge. At ambient temperature 30 degrees Celsius or 86 degrees Fahrenheit as in the tropics, maximum recharge voltage will drop to 13.5-13.8 volts. Therefore in cooler region like the subtropics, vehicle battery exploded by overcharge has less risk.

Few years a go, charging system voltage could be set as it was using electromagnetic switch (cut-off). Today the voltage regulation is done by Integrated Circuit (IC) and no longer adjustable. But lately there some are IC voltage regulators that can be adjusted. Apparently this adjustable IC voltage regulators are manufactured to suit a variety of different voltage to recharge batteries.

If you are using dry cell battery, the easiest way to prevent overcharge is to use a voltmeter to monitor battery voltage while driving. But now the voltmeter is not popular anymore as standard equipment on the dashboard, because IC voltage regulator is very stable. It is necessary to add a voltmeter to monitor battery voltage, if the voltage exceeds the maximum battery voltage, eg 14 volts, then immediately turn on the additional load such as lights, a/c, radio, tape, etc.. Reduce the engine revolution (RPM) by shifting to higher gear, or reduce speed.

Usually overcharge occurs when driving in the daytime with high engine revolution. High environment temperature will rise gas formation and lower gassing voltage. In some countries where it is compulsory to use headlight in the daytime, overcharge risk is lower as slightly lower alternator voltage due to current absorbed by headlight.

Now there are commercially available digital voltmeters that can be plugged into cigar lighter connector. As shown in below photo.

Circuit to monitor the battery voltage can be read in the article "Simple Battery Voltage Indicator With LED".

Shown below is a cut-off voltage regulator of an old alternator, voltage of this type regulator can be easily adjusted. The top cover is removed to show two electromagnet relays. But the regulated voltage is unstable.

Another way to prevent the battery explode by overcharge is to reduce the alternator output voltage, by placing diode in series between the alternator and battery. Diode reduces the voltage of 0.6 volts. So if your charging system voltage is 14.4 volts, then after installing diode voltage will drop to 13.8 volts. It should be ensured that the diode is capable to allow current strong enough to recharge the batteries and simultaneously turn on vehicle electrical systems such as: lights, a/c, ignition, fuel injection, engine management system, Electronic Control Unit (ECU), radio / tape, etc.. Minimum value of the current goes pass through the diode is about 50% of battery capacity, eg. for the 40AH battery, the resulting alternator current through the diode is 20 amperes. And of course the amount of current depends also to the amount of power (watts) of vehicle accessories.

Big sized diode is usually expensive and rarely sold. But it can be assembled from several small sized 2 amperes diodes. To make a big 20 A diode, it is required 10 pieces of parallel 2 A diodes. Photo below shows a parallel circuit of 2 A diodes. Alternator diode can do also.

Diagram for diode connection can be seen in the image below. Diode is connected between the alternator and battery, with the diode current flow from alternator to the battery. Supply power to the vehicle electrical system is connected to the positive pole of the battery, to ensure electric current can flow directly from the battery to the electrical system, without going through diode. The diode doesn’t allow electric current in the opposite direction.

Photo below shows the charging wire is pointed by red arrow. The cable is always the biggest of all alternator cables.

Be careful when connecting the wire from alternator to diode and to battery. Wire with large current must be well connected. Poor connection can increase resistance and generate heat, so it can end up with fire. Diode also requires cooling, place diode away from heat sources such as exhaust and radiator.
